A lab test can reveal a lot about a person's health. One of these is cholesterol, which is often higher than it should be. But this is rarely taken seriously and most people just ignore it. But they shouldn't, because high cholesterol can be a breeding ground for many problems.
What is cholesterol and what role does it play in the way our body works?
Cholesterol is an organic compound that is one of the fats. It plays an important role in many processes in our body, such as building cells and making certain hormones.
Cholesterol is produced by the liver from saturated fats in food. It binds to specific proteins in all parts of the body and enters the bloodstream. When combined with proteins, cholesterol is converted into lipoprotein. There are two types: low-density LDL cholesterol and high-density HDL cholesterol.
- LDL cholesterol - the bad cholesterol: it transports cholesterol from the liver to the cells. If too much of this builds up in the blood, it can cause serious damage to blood vessel walls. It builds up under the lining of arteries, making their walls hard and stiff. This condition is called atherosclerosis, which can later lead to cardiovascular disease, for example. Therefore, lowering LDL cholesterol is very important.
- HDL cholesterol - the good cholesterol: it removes excess cholesterol from the blood and returns it to the liver, which also reduces the risk of developing the diseases mentioned above. The cholesterol transported to the liver is used, among other things, to form bile acids, which help digest food.
Measuring cholesterol levels
Cholesterol levels can be checked with a simple blood test, but you don't necessarily need to go to the laboratory to check your cholesterol levels, as you can now measure cholesterol levels at home using a simple cholesterol test strip.
It works in a similar way to measuring blood glucose levels: you need to prick your fingertip and then drip the blood onto the test strip. The lipids in the blood sample will then colour the test strip over a few minutes and the cholesterol level can be determined from the colour. Based on the wavelength of the colour that develops, the total cholesterol level in the blood can be accurately determined. However, if a more accurate reading is needed, the traditional laboratory test is the answer.
What is a normal cholesterol level?
There is a reference range for normal cholesterol, but it is important to know that the normal range may be different at certain ages - for example, it may increase slightly in older age, but women of childbearing age may also have slightly higher cholesterol levels.
Total cholesterol levels below 5 mmol/l are considered normal. Of these, LDL cholesterol: below 3 mmol/l and triglycerides: below 1.7 mmol/l are within the reference range. HDL cholesterol is above 1 mmol/l for men and 1.3 mmol/l for women.
Why is it bad to have high cholesterol?
High cholesterol leads to cardiovascular disease, which is the most common cause of death in Hungary. The long-term consequences can include atherosclerosis, heart attack and stroke. Very often, diabetes, obesity and high blood pressure are also associated with elevated cholesterol.
Unfortunately, many people do not pay any attention to high cholesterol, although it should be taken seriously, as the risk of cardiovascular disease can increase several-fold if there is too much bad cholesterol in the body. At 6.5 mmol/litre the risk is doubled, and at 7.8 mmol/litre the risk is tripled!
What causes high cholesterol?
In most cases, too much cholesterol is the result of a poor lifestyle and is mainly due to diet, but lack of exercise and obesity also play a major role. But of course it is not the fault of everyone that they have high cholesterol. There are also genetic predisposing factors, and diseases and medications can also cause it.
Genetic factors, for example, are differences in the proteins that make up lipoproteins, and familial accumulation is clearly observed. If there is a family history of high cholesterol and cardiovascular disease, it is worth paying close attention. Particular attention should be paid after the age of 40, when cholesterol levels tend to rise sharply.
Certain diseases, such as kidney, liver and thyroid problems, can also cause cholesterol to rise, as can diabetes. It may also be due to drug side effects.
Reducing high cholesterol naturally
As with most diseases, the best prevention is prevention, which is possible through a good, healthy lifestyle. Cholesterol levels can be controlled naturally to a certain extent by paying attention to your diet and exercising regularly. And if you want to give yourself a little extra support, you can do it by drinking 6-year-old Korean ginseng!
Cholesterol-lowering herbs like South Korean 6-year-old ginseng products
Cholesterol-lowering herbs affect many processes in our body. So it is possible to treat problems that are constantly destroying our health without drugs.
High cholesterol can also be treated at home if we take care to lead a good lifestyle. If you want even better results, you can fight it with 6-year-old Korean ginseng or fermental ginseng capsules with high levels of rg3 ginsenoside. Lowering cholesterol with ginseng has been proven to work, as a study has shown the effect of Korean ginseng water and ethanol extracts on cholesterol levels (hypercholesterolaemia) in experimental rats. To our knowledge, this is the first time such an effect has been reported.
One of the main properties of 6-year-old ginseng is that it improves the condition of blood vessels and provides better blood circulation. The mechanism is that ginseng contributes to the release of nitric oxide, which promotes the dilation of blood vessels without any side effects. According to Korean and Western European research, 6-year-old ginseng is thus effective in lowering cholesterol levels.
Ginseng and ginsenosides have long been studied for their therapeutic effects on the vitality of the body, the immune system, various types of cancer, inflammatory anomalies, nervous disorders, reproductive system function and cardiovascular diseases. Recent studies have shown that ginseng strongly inhibits in vitro pancreatic lipase* activity and reduced obesity and plasma lipid profile in experimental rodents fed high-fat diets.
Results showed that 6-year-old Korean ginseng was effective in reducing total serum cholesterol levels. It also increased food efficiency ratio (FER) and differential white blood cell count (WBC).
